FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Bland County board of supervisors APPROVES elimination of the motor vehicle license decal

May 30, 2014

~

(The County of Bland, Virginia) – The Bland County Board of Supervisors approved amendments to the motor vehicle license ordinances following a public hearing on May 27, 2014 at 5:00 pm in the Bland County Courthouse. The new ordinances go into effect January 1, 2015.

The major changes to the motor vehicle license fee ordinances are the elimination of the decal and the date of assessment. These changes do not eliminate the motor vehicle license fee.Under the new changes, 2014 is the last year for vehicle decals in Bland County. Instead of purchasing a decal, the motor vehicle license fee will be added to the personal property tax ticket.

The fee will be assessed based on registered vehicles owned on January 1st, the same as personal property. The new ordinance will go into effect January 1, 2015. Since the current decals do not expire until April 15, 2015, the fee assessed on the 2015 tax tickets will be at 75% or $15. In 2016, the full fee will be assessed.

Under current ordinance, citizens cannot pay the motor vehicle license fee and obtain a decal until personal property taxes are paid. Under the new ordinance, both can be paid independent of each other. However, the Treasurer’s office by ordinance will utilize the DMV Stop program that prevents individuals who are delinquent in payment of their taxes from conducting business at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
